Sea Control 58 – Rear Admiral Parry’s Super Highway

In August 2014, Rear Admiral Chris Parry (Royal Navy, Retired) published his new book “Super Highway: Sea Power in the 21st Century“. In his book, he argues that in the second decade of the 21st century, the sea is set to reclaim its status as the world’s preeminent strategic medium. Almost everything that travels virtually between continents and states on the Internet moves, in reality, as in previous eras of globalization, across, under or over the sea. Parry makes the case that the next decade will witness a scramble for the sea, involving competition for oceanic resources and the attempted political and economic colonization of large tracts of what have, until now, been considered international waters and shipping routes. The sea will become the potential arena for a classic “Great Game” between the major powers and developing states.

In this episode Matthew Hipple speaks with Rear Admiral Parry about his intentions in writing the book, the changing nature of technology & sea power, the impacts of an inevitably changing climate, and how to face the challenge of those pushing for new norms in contradiction to the freedom of the seas.
