Cartoon of the month: Egypt Warming to Russia

The visit by Russia’s defense and foreign ministersSergei Shoigu Sergey Lavrov respectively – to Egypt last month is seen as an attempt by both countries to assert themselves amid a Middle East’s power vacuum, as ties between Egypt and the US have cooled, mainly due to the perceived US support of the Muslim Brotherhood and criticism of the military’s removal of President Mohamed Morsi in July.

This cartoon was drawn by Palestinian cartoonist Ramzy Taweel. He was born in 1978 in Beirut and in 1993, he returned with his family to Palestine. Today, he lives in Ramallah and works as a media officer for the Palestinian presidents office. Taweel is a MA Graduate in International Studies.
